World of Spectrum
Searchable threads in one long post:
Jonathan Cauldwell caught with egg on his faceJonathan Cauldwell claims to be the ZX Spectrum's most prolific games developer and a member of MENSA, and to this day continues to spread misinformation that RCL are on the verge of delivering the Vega+ to almost 4800 backers. Despite RCL missing every deadline, having no games list, no PEGI certification, no box or manual, and 650 outstanding refund requests worth well over £73000, nothing seems to deter him. Cauldwell steadfastly refuses to believe he has been scammed by Retro Computers Ltd, and has repeatedly called RCL non-believers a hate mob.
A source close to Jonathan (that does not wish to be identified) has stated that Cauldwell paid for Stuart Thomas to track down critics and the supposed hate mob for RCL, and helped bankroll the manufacturing costs for the small prototype run along with a "small contribution" to legal costs. Just like Inquirer "shill-for-hire" Chris Merrimen, Cauldwell signed a non disclosure agreement with RCL and uses this to claim he has secret information about the Vega+ debacle that he cannot talk about.
The small manufacturing run was critical to Jonathan because Cauldwell promised on social media that he would leave the retro scene if the Vega+ failed to materialise.
Since the start of November 2018, Cauldwell has been extremely active on social media but repeatedly refuses to comment about his financial contributions to RCL. Cauldwell has stated that he would not ask for his money back or royalties due to him until the majority of backers have their devices, but Jonathan has claimed the Vega+ has materialised but in a limited way. He has also lied about not speaking to RCL for over a year.
Jonathan Cauldwell was happy to supply games to RCL when Paul Andrews was in charge back in early 2016:
In late 2016, more than 6 months after Paul Andrews had quit RCL, Cauldwell suddenly changed his tune and began tweeting claiming that Paul's previous company Alten8 didn't pay him what he was owed.
Bilge; happy with the price of a few pints. Only one company didn't pay what it owed me - Alten8— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) November 26, 2016
Shilling for RCL
Played with the new Vega+ yesterday; beautifully designed, screen sharp and bright and a very good selection of games built in.— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 21 October 2016
3 types of kid in the kindergarten: those who build towers with blocks, those who admire those towers and the bullies who knock them down.— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 20 November 2016
For those who've asked, I'm with Levy, Martin and Fogarty in the first group. The Vega+ trolls are in the third.— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 20 November 2016
First Vega+ units will ship after 20th February 2017. Not long now folks...— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 10 February 2017
Jonathan Cauldwell helping RCL
Cauldwell made no secret of the fact he was actively assisting RCL by contacting developers to supply their games for the Vega+. In spite of his social media postings, none of the externally developed titles appeared on the prototype devices, including many of his own titles that were promised such as Jubbles.
Sick of the vitriol, now actively helping the Vega+. Contacted a few excellent Spectrum devs today, more games for the Vega+ #zxvega— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 11 March 2017
I've played these, will sell in droves. Want your ZX games on it? PM me, I'll put you in touch with the developers. https://t.co/DtI5qLlWWg— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 16 March 2017

Cauldwell threatens to quit!
On Sunday 7th May, 2017 on the World of Spectrum forums, Jonathan Cauldwell threatened to quit the scene forever if the Vega+ does not come out:
Jonathan: What can I say? If this product does not come to pass I shall walk away from the scene and will not return.
guesser: Don't say that... This RCL nonsense has done enough damage already.
Jonathan: The damage has been done by the enemies of RCL.
Nazi references and the Vega+ Hate Mob
Cauldwell began his Nazi themed posts on Sunday the 4th June 2017 on Facebook:
It would appear that the best way to have a healthy discussion about the Vega+ is to ban people that disagree:
Gareth Corfield's got to go!
Reporter Gareth Corfield has written a number of articles about the Vega+ for The Register, and according to Jonathan "he's got to go..."
Seeing their clueless reports on the Vega+ I'm half expecting The Register to report WW2 Bomber Found on Moon next. Corfield's got to go...— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 12 August 2017
I have a real #zxvega+. Excellent piece of kit, backers will love it. Unlike The Register's reporting, Vega+ is genuine.— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) August 12, 2017
Not a prototype. Simply chipped in to help move project along unlike some doing utmost to derail. Will flag up nonsense when I see it too— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) August 12, 2017
Frustrating, definitely. Damned when they communicate, damned when they don't. V small number of individuals have poisoned the scene— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) August 12, 2017
Been in IT long enough not to trust any deadline. Not part of RCL though, so who knows? It'll arrive when it arrives— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) August 12, 2017
Definitely not the backers' fault, it's a tiny number of people trying to stop the project by any means then claiming to be on backers' side— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) August 12, 2017
Oh they are. You wouldn't believe half of what has been going on, one reason why I've tried not to get too involved. Hope it ends soon— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) August 12, 2017
RCL made mistakes sure but more sinned against. No reason for me to speak for RCL but I do know what's right. Poor backers in middle of this— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) August 12, 2017
Cauldwell will write all 1000 games!
Oh, and as far as backers are concerned let me make this clear: If I have to write every game on the Vega+, I'll do it. All 1000— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 12 August 2017
I won't need to, there are some fantastic games on the Vega+ but just so that those who are still trying to get authors to withdraw know...— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 12 August 2017
No reason to presume it won't. No HW issues, the pre-production run was done to iron those out. Don't have latest FW on mine though— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) August 13, 2017
Info I have is things are moving swiftly. Don't know about finances but strongly suspect it isn't a problem now. Can't say more— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) August 13, 2017
With legal issues I had concerns at times but never lost faith. Worst prob over, end in sight. Blood on carpet. Not for me to tell story tho— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) August 13, 2017
I'm not part of RCL but hate mob are still guessing. Clueless as ever, they've been p*ssing in the wind for months. They've lost, game over— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) September 16, 2017
Just wish Vega+ hate mob would move on. Turn attention to something a little more constructive. Go do something inspiring— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 16 September 2017
Vega hate mob are main reason why this has been delayed. Game's up though. Can't say how much longer, not part of RCL. Wish I could— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) September 17, 2017
Should stress I'm not part of RCL but I can put your mind at ease. I have a little inside info and these are not issues.— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) September 17, 2017
Pero pero? Stop listening to George Haw Haw— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) September 17, 2017
Have a little more info than most & know what's been going on WRT the Vega+. Tried to be a good egg and help the project. You?— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) September 17, 2017
Limits to what I know, not part of RCL. Not intimately involved with the project, just got involved to help move it along. Know enough tho— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) September 17, 2017
Who knows? I'll send RCL a copy if you like. Have created a keymap file so easy enough to put on a Vega/Vega+ if not.— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) October 29, 2017
Somehow I managed to find the time to write two games in 2017, Jubbles and Egghead 6. 2018 marks ten years since I started work on Arcade Game Designer and it's still taking up most of my development time— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 1 January 2018
Seems RCL have shipped a few hundred VEGA+ units with a handful of games, most written by myself. VEGA+ has attracted criticism, some justified, some malicious. Can't speak for RCL but for constructive comments on my games, PM me. Love games, would love to hear your thoughts— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 5 August 2018
I really don't know any more. You stick to your guns, you do what's right in the teeth of fierce opposition and then the bad guys are conciliatory. Not long after some request your help. Yet the forces they unleashed are still being obnoxious. WTF?— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 20 October 2018
Fair enough. Only 3 - 4 haters, non-backers trying to stop project behind the scenes & spreading misinformation. Understandably aggrieved backers not in same category. Knowing explosive information about what haters did and having to stay quiet when under attack isn't easy tho— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) October 28, 2018
Let's hope so. I naively tried to help but there were forces who were determined to stop the project. Still massively explosive revelations to come about the 3 or 4 haters who did that but it could be years before anyone can legally talk about it— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) October 28, 2018
Do yourself a big favour and be very careful what you tweet about RCL, Vega and Vega+. The scene currently has no idea what went on and I wouldn't want to see people getting drawn into criminal proceedings based on the blogs and vlogs of a few deliberately misinformed commenters— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) November 2, 2018
Knowing what's happened but being unable to tweet about it while under attack from trolls isn't a particularly pleasant experience. The trolls still have no idea but they'll find out eventually. I wouldn't want to be in the shoes of the trolls' heroes— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) November 12, 2018
Not at all surprising to the very few of us that know what's really been going on (but can't talk about) for the past few years. It has been a nightmare and a handful of idiots will have to account for their actions— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) November 17, 2018
I've tried not to get involved but...— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 17 November 2018
Deletions and blocking
Jonathan Cauldwell has a long history of blocking people on twitter, deleting tweets, and recently he has been caught unblocking people so he can post a nasty reply and then re-blocking them.
On November 17th 2018, Cauldwell deleted the following tweet:
Twitter user SeanR has recently reported being blocked, unblocked, and blocked again by Cauldwell:
oh do FUCK OFF with that "we know the truth but can't talk about it" #zxvega bullshit.— SeanR (@SeanR1974) November 17, 2018
What's stopping you from talking about it, other than the money you took from #rcl to put your games on the piece of shite they made?
I can't believe you unblocked me to make a nothing tweet.
Outstanding money owed to Cauldwell
Just to clear things up, I will not request a penny from RCL until the vast majority of backers receive a Vega+— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) 17 November 2018
Haven't played with a V2 so don't know, the V1 had a number of issues I hoped would be sorted. Rather a lot of people wanted the original Vega though— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) November 20, 2018
That's life. ATM everyone appears to have lost, the good guys, the bad guys, backers... the whole lot— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) November 23, 2018
Good man. I take it you know who the bad guys are and why they've been trying to bring the whole lot down...?— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) November 23, 2018
It's an odd feeling. I could tweet one sentence and the whole scene would know instantly and turn accordingly. That would be wrong though and I'd end up in serious trouble. I have to wait, potentially for years. Right now nobody knows who the good guys and bad guys are.— Jonathan Cauldwell (@ZXSpectrumDev) November 23, 2018
Egghead 6 Vega+ production line
Cauldwell inserted a fake Vega+ production line screen in the game Egghead 6:
Quitting the scene
On November 10th 2018, Jonathan Cauldwell posted several comments on George Cropper's video about the refunds site being attacked. Cauldwell back-pedalled on his earlier tweets where he said that the prototype Vega+ he was given had no hardware problems, and he also claimed that he hadn't spoken to RCL for over a year:

Confirmation of the shilling that went on from certain individuals during this absolute scandal. What a disgrace!
Well it seems justice has prevailed for once and no surprises there to be honest what a ridiculous bit of behaviour !
"Our Indiegogo campaign is to raise funds to manufacture the first 2,500 or more units of the Vega+ in the UK, and to prepare us for the second production run."
